I agree that mobile wallets should be the extension of a broader, more accessible "wallet in the cloud". In general, this approach makes the most sense. People are going to get over the privacy concerns they have with putting their payment information in the cloud. Vendors are going to figure out how to make it secure.

What's less clear is if someone is going to figure out a set of use cases for a mobile-accessed cloud wallet that actually make consumers want to switch from their leather wallet. I have talked a lot about the lameness of current NFC mobile wallets like Google Wallet. They aren't radically better than leather wallets and in some ways they are actually worse.

Your Starbucks example is a perfect illustration of the kind of convenience and value that mobile wallets can provide. More vendors need to start thinking in those terms if they want mobile wallets to take off.

I´m asking myself: what will be the drivers for adoption of future so called ,,wallets,,? I see the potential in location based services. Wallet APIs – clearly manageable by client (favourites). Easy reload of funds. Probably existance of several independent sub-wallets which would need clear and ,,instant,, clearing system (virtual currency?) Too many questions and what is perfect – many opportunities too. Btw Dave – thank you very much for your presentation in Vienna last week – very interesting and inspiring!.

The question then becomes whether the ID part of the (hyper)wallet should be stored on the phone or off the phone… I tend to disagree with Google on that point.
