Guys I know there are $1 coins — what I meant to say (and I’m sure what the Director meant) was that there will never be a $1 coin that replaces dollar bills — sorry for being unclear.

Err, there are many $1 coins. We had the Susan B. Anthony ones, then the Sacagawea ones, and now presidential ones. I believe there have been more – but not in my lifetime. Infact, I have one or two of each of these dollars.
So, uh, yeah. I actually just used one a few days ago to pay for a soda in a machine. It took it – no problem.

I may be missing something, but the $1 coin has already been issued. Indeed, I have a few $1 coins at home, from my most recent visit to the US.
Wikipedia tells me that they’ve been minted since 2007, with newly designed $1 coins issued every few months. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Presidential_$1_Coin_Program
