And my befuddled habit of trying to feed my house keys into Tube barrier ticket readers isn’t me being stupid, it’s me being ahead of the curve. In Hong Kong, one of additional uses for the Octopus card is building access – participating transit operator NTR is also a major property developer in the region and flats it sells come with an Octopus card for access.

[Dave Birch] Like most middle class English persons, I wake up to the sound of the BBC Radio 4 Today programme. There is a real disadvantage to this, though, because later in the day I sometimes can’t remember which of things I think I heard were real and which were the tail end of a dream. Who can tell whether stories about robots replacing children riding camels in Dubai or police dogs being muzzled to prevent them from biting criminals are hallucinations or not? But I just checked on the web confirmed that today really is the beginning of National Identity Fraud Prevention Week.

[Dave Birch] According to APACS there are now more than 140 million plastic cards in use in the UK, with almost 68% of spending accounted for by debit cards. This year, total plastic card use is expected to top £320 billion, against a predicted £277 billion of cash payments. One of the reasons for the growth in cards is, naturally, the growth in POS terminals and (insert fanfare sound effect here) the UK’s one millionth POS terminal has gone online (well, the one millionth TID has been issued, which may not be the same thing). As of August 2006, APACS say that of the 900,000 “face to face” (ie, attended) POS terminals in the UK only 50,000 are not chip and PIN.

[Dave Birch] Our friends at Javelin report that almost a third of U.S. consumers were victims of a data breach during a year-long study. Less than 1% of those whose data was lost were actually victims of identity fraud. This supports Simon Williams point. In fact, data breaches were responsible for only 6% of all known cases of identity fraud, which raises a genuine question about the value of "disclosure legislation" that simply means expense for businesses and may not protect consumers from identity fraud at all.

[Dave Birch] No-one can possibly be surprised by a survey that says that consumers are turned away from online businesses with “transaction issuses”. By “transaction issues” I’m sure they mean web sites that don’t work properly more than a decade after web commerce became widespread.

[Simon Williams] Following on from the piece about Dispatches, I have some more data to add to the discussion. We (ID Analytics) have carried out a detailed analysis of security breaches in the US by comparing 500,000 consumer identities that were revealed in breaches and comparing them with the more than 500 million risk events stored in our network.

[Mike Burden] In Paris last week at the conference on “Cartes a puce et Transport” (ie, smart cards in transport) there were a number of presentations about NFC. It really is beginning to dominate the technology roadmap, despite the fact that there are no handsets out there, that no-one seems to know what the business model might be, mobile operators and service providers can’t agree on architecture and most of the public have never heard of it. There is a definite “X factor” here: once you’ve used an NFC phone to pay for a coffee and jump on a train (even if it’s just at a demo booth at an exhibition) you can see why it’s getting so much attention.
